AI Citation

A named reference to a specific business, brand, or source within an AI engine's generated response.

Definition

An AI citation is an explicit reference — by name, domain, or link — that an AI engine includes in a generated response. Citations can appear as hyperlinked sources in engines like Perplexity, as named businesses in recommendations ('You should try Smith HVAC'), or as domain references in AI Overviews. A citation is distinct from a general mention: it identifies a specific entity as a source or recommendation rather than referencing a concept.

Why it matters

Citations are the atomic unit of AI visibility. An engine that cites a business by name or links to its website is directly routing user attention to that business. Citation frequency across a prompt universe reveals which businesses AI engines treat as authorities for specific topics, locations, or query types. Agencies use citation data to benchmark client performance and identify gaps.

Example

A user asks Perplexity 'What's the best roofing company in Austin?' The response names three companies by name and links to their websites. Each named company has received one citation for that query. GeoScript records the ordered citation list for every prompt run, so citation frequency and rank can be tracked over time.

How it differs from related terms

A citation is a named reference. AI visibility is the broader outcome — a business can have low citation frequency but still appear prominently if the engine recommends it without naming a source. AI share of voice aggregates citations across all prompts and competitors. Recommendation rate measures how often a business is recommended, regardless of whether it is explicitly cited.
