Glossary/AI Visibility

AI Visibility

Whether and how prominently a business appears in AI engine responses to relevant queries.

Definition

AI visibility is the measurable degree to which a business is present, cited, or recommended in AI engine outputs — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overview, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, and emerging agents — when users ask questions relevant to that business. Unlike traditional search ranking, AI visibility is not a position number. It is observed by running a structured universe of queries across engines and measuring how often, how accurately, and how favorably a business appears in the generated answers.

Why it matters

As AI engines become the first stop for consumer and B2B research, a business absent from AI responses loses consideration before it can even compete. Agencies that can measure, report on, and improve client AI visibility have a new, defensible service offering. Businesses that ignore AI visibility risk steadily declining brand reach even if their traditional search rankings hold.

Example

A plumbing company in Nashville runs well in Google search but appears in only 4% of AI engine responses to queries like 'best plumber in Nashville' or 'who do I call for a burst pipe at night.' That 4% figure is their AI visibility baseline — the starting point GeoScript measures and works to improve.

How it differs from related terms

AI visibility is the umbrella metric. Concepts like AI citation, AI share of voice, and recommendation rate are more specific measures within it. AI visibility describes the overall presence; those terms measure particular dimensions of how that presence manifests.
