AI Share of Voice
The percentage of AI engine responses, across a defined prompt universe, in which a business is mentioned relative to competitors.
Definition
AI share of voice (AI SOV) measures how often one business is mentioned or cited in AI responses compared to its relevant competitors, expressed as a percentage of the total response pool. To calculate it, you define a prompt universe (a set of queries relevant to a category, market, or geography), run those prompts across AI engines, extract all entity mentions, and then compute each entity's share. A business mentioned in 15 out of 100 relevant responses has a 15% AI share of voice for that universe.
Why it matters
Share of voice translates AI visibility into a competitive metric. It is not enough to know that your client appears sometimes — you need to know whether they appear more or less often than their direct competitors. Agencies use AI SOV to set benchmarks, report progress, and make the case for ongoing AI optimization services.
Example
Three HVAC companies compete in Denver. Across 200 AI prompts about Denver HVAC services, Company A appears 60 times, Company B appears 50 times, Company C appears 10 times, and 80 responses mention no specific company. AI SOV: Company A 30%, Company B 25%, Company C 5%. Company C's low SOV, despite having strong traditional search presence, reveals a clear AI visibility gap.
How it differs from related terms
AI share of voice is a competitive, relative metric. AI citation counts the raw number of citations without comparing to competitors. AI visibility describes whether a business appears at all. SOV specifically answers 'compared to everyone else, how often does this business appear?'
