Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

The practice of structuring content and technical signals so that AI engines select and use that content when generating answers.

Definition

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the discipline of shaping a website's content, structure, and metadata so that AI engines — which generate prose answers rather than ranked lists of links — are more likely to draw from that content when forming a response. AEO encompasses clear entity definition (who the business is, what it does, where it operates), structured data markup, accurate and complete factual content, FAQ sections that match how users phrase questions, and signals that indicate authority and trustworthiness for specific topics.

Why it matters

Traditional SEO optimizes for link ranking. AEO optimizes for answer inclusion — a fundamentally different signal. A site that ranks #1 on Google might be ignored by AI engines if its content is ambiguous, poorly structured, or lacks the factual signals those engines rely on. AEO is how agencies deliver measurable improvement in AI visibility for clients, not just better traditional search rankings.

Example

A dental practice's website has good SEO but vague content: 'We offer great dental care' rather than 'Dr. Sarah Kim provides general and cosmetic dentistry at 145 Main St, Raleigh, NC.' After AEO work — adding structured LocalBusiness schema, explicit service pages with named procedures, and FAQ blocks matching common patient questions — AI engines begin citing the practice in responses to queries like 'dentist near downtown Raleigh who does invisalign.'

How it differs from related terms

AEO is the practice of optimizing for answer engines. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is a closely related term used interchangeably by some practitioners; the key difference in some uses is that GEO is broader (all generative AI) while AEO historically focused on voice assistants and early answer boxes. Both are now used to describe the same category of work for large language model-based engines.
