Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

Optimizing content and signals so that large language model-based engines prefer a business's information when generating answers.

Definition

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of shaping a business's online presence — content, structure, metadata, entity signals, and factual accuracy — so that AI engines built on large language models (LLMs) are more likely to select and cite that business's information when generating answers. GEO extends traditional SEO principles into a new context where the output is generated prose, not a ranked list, and where ranking factors are based on language model internals rather than PageRank-style link graphs.

Why it matters

AI engines don't browse the web the same way traditional search does. They rely on training data, real-time retrieval, and reasoning about which sources are authoritative and relevant. A business that hasn't explicitly structured its content for GEO may be invisible in AI-generated answers even with strong traditional search presence. GEO is the new frontier of digital marketing that agencies need to offer to stay relevant.

Example

A software agency has excellent domain authority but its homepage copy reads: 'We build amazing custom software solutions.' No location, no named specialties, no client types. AI engines struggle to recommend it for specific queries. After GEO work — explicit technology practice areas, named client industries, a structured FAQ, and LocalBusiness schema — the agency begins appearing in responses to 'custom software agency for healthcare startups in Chicago.'

How it differs from related terms

GEO and AEO (answer engine optimization) are often used interchangeably. Both describe optimizing for AI-generated answers. Some practitioners use AEO specifically for voice/early systems and GEO for LLM-based engines; others treat them as synonyms. The content and technical work is essentially the same. Neither GEO nor SEO guarantees AI engine inclusion — they improve the probability.
